YARN POPPY PROJECT

Horley Evening WI warmly invites everyone in the community to join together and knit or crochet poppies for Memorial Sunday, covering the railings at Horley Memorial Grounds. Regardless of age or experience, whether you're just starting out or are already skilled, your participation is welcome.

You may also choose to write a short tribute—dedicating your poppy to someone special or explaining your reasons for taking part. These contributions will be compiled into a book, preserving memories as part of Horley’s history.

Our aim is to bring the community together in a project that we can all be proud of.

This initiative is supported by Horley Evening WI, Horley Town Council, the Horley Branch of the British Legion, and Horley Library.

As this is an ambitious undertaking, we encourage you to begin right away! Feel free to create as many poppies as you would like.

Here’s how you can participate:

  • Create one or more poppies by knitting or crocheting. If your yarn skills are limited, we are also looking for black strips to be created, in order to attach the poppies to the railings.
  • Drop off your completed items at Horley Library during opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 09:30 - 17:00 (excluding super access times).
  • Leave your written tribute at the library or email it to us at: Poppy Project
  • You can collect knitting and crochet patterns at the library or download them here:

We hope to be able to provide some wool in the future once we are able to get funding. Though if you are able to donate red or black wool that would be appreciated. We will keep you posted, here and via social media on Facebook and Instagram.

Happy knitting and crocheting.
